How to Spend One Day in Marseille
Marseille is the oldest city in France, and when you arrive you will automatically see the authenticity and culture of the city. We visited as a stop on a Virgin Voyages cruise, but we are so glad we spent the day in Marseille because we fell in love. Marseille is a port city in the South of France, and a great stopping point if you’re going to be visiting the French Riviera as well. This province of France is known for it’s lavender, so you will also spot local lavender & soap shops every where you turn. We spent the whole day walking around and exploring Marseille, and we’re going to share our favorite things we did with you all!
How to Get Around Marseille
The best way to get around Marseille is to walk! We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go, from the old town of Le Panier, to the old port, or to the colorful neighborhood of Cours Julien. There is also a metro in Marseille if you prefer not to walk or need a break from walking for a minute. I believe Uber works there as well if you really need it, but walking is the best and most efficient way to get around the city.
Best Things to do in Marseille
Cathedral La Major - A beautiful Cathedral at the entrance of the city. The architecture and design are very unique and it’s a must see when you in Marseille!
Walk around Le Panier - Le Panier is oldest quarter in Marseille. It has the picturesque narrow, cobblestone streets and there are cute shops, restaurants, and cafes all around. This was our favorite area of Marseille so we highly recommend spending a few hours here. It’s fairly small so you will be able to see everything within a few hours.
Stroll along Vieux Port aka the Old Port - This is the most beautiful area of Marseille in our opinion! There are lots of shops, restaurants, and even a market down by the water.
Fort Saint-Jean- an old fort at the end of the city. It’s free to enter and to visit, and it’s definitely worth it! There were people swimming nearby as well so if you want to go in for a dip, you definitely can.
Explore Cours Julien - a local neighborhood of Marseille known for it’s colorful buildings! Here you will find lots of shops and restaurants, and it’s a less touristy area than Le Panier and the Old Port.
