Isla Mujeres is an island off the coast of Cancun. It means “island of women” which just drew us in immediately haha. It’s super easy to get to and one of our favorite places we’ve ever been! The island is so versatile that It’s great for a day trip from Cancun or you can stay at one of the hotels and make a whole vacation out of it! From amazing food, to cute shops and epic beaches, Isla Mujeres has it all.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres

The best way to get to Isla Mujeres is by ferry. The Ultramar Ferry runs every 30 minutes or so from the Puerto Juarez port in Cancun. The ferry cost about $12 per person round trip and is a 20 minute ride. We made sure to get on one of the first ferries to leave so we could spend as much time on the island as possible since we were only going for the day.

Once you get to Isla Mujeres there are a few ways to get around. Since the island is only about 4.5 miles long, t’s very popular to rent a golf cart or motorcycle which is what most tourists do. We tried to rent a golf cart but Shanna is the only one of us who has a drivers license and forgot hers that day so we ended up not being able to. But it would have been about $50 to rent the golf cart for the day so in the end money saved, right? We ended up walking a lot that day (in flip flops lol) but we saw different parts of the island than everyone else so it all worked out.

Best things to Do

  • Playa Norte

  • Punta Sur

  • Explore the shops

  • Get lost in the island streets

  • Tortugranja

  • Have a michelada (spicy, Mexican beer) on the beach

Where to Eat

  • Taqueria Lalo’s

  • Green Verde

We only spent the day in Isla Mujeres and since we couldn’t rent a golf cart, there were things we didn’t get a chance to see. I guess that just gives us an excuse to go back ;) If you want to check out what we did in Isla Mujeres in more detail, make sure you watch our vlog below! The second half of the video is our day on the island where we give you more tips and tell you about our experience visiting!

How to spend a day in Isla Mujeres

This was both of our first times in Mexico and it was amazing! One of our favorite countries we've visited for sure. We decided not to stay in the hotel zone of Cancun and we're so glad we didn't. We got to experience the authentic and local side of Cancun and it was so awesome.
