Best Things to Do in Gozo, Malta
Gozo is one of the 3 islands that make up the country of Malta. During our trip we didn’t realize how much there actually was to do in Gozo! We originally only planned one day here, but we liked it so much & found so many interesting and unique things to do, that we decided to come back a second time during our trip. Make sure you read our full blog post on Malta first, as this one will only be about Gozo island specifically.
Gozo is a pretty small island (it’s only 9 miles in length), but like we said above, there is a ton to do when visiting there. It’s do-able as a day trip from Malta, but we really think you need a few days to properly explore the island. We loved Gozo so much that if we could do our trip all over again, we would stay there for a few days and stay on the main island of Malta for the rest of the time. For everything you need to know about visiting Gozo, keep reading!
How to Get to Gozo
The best way to get to Gozo is by the Gozo Channel Ferry. It’s about a 20 minute ride from the Cirkewwa port in Malta. The ferry costs about €5 round trip per person. If you are staying closer to Valletta, there is a Gozo Fast Ferry that leaves and drops you off in the Valletta port. That ferry takes 45 minutes and is about €15 round trip per person. We took both ferries and preferred the Gozo Channel since it was a slower ferry and you could sit outside. But the Cirkewwa port is far from Valletta, so it just depends on what makes the most sense for you!
How to Get Around Gozo
You can rent a car, motorbike, or ATV if you chose, but we just used Bolt. Bolt is an app-based ride share that is available in Gozo and Malta. It was affordable and worked really well so we used that both times we visited Gozo. We also saw bikes to rent if you wanted to as well. If you prefer to explore on your own, we think a car or motorbike is best, but beware that some of the roads in Gozo are not paved properly and they drive on the left side of the road.
Best Things to Do in Gozo
Visit the Ggantija Temples - These temples are from Neolithic times, and have been around longer than the pyramids of Egypt! They are very interesting to see in real life, and are also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Wander around Victoria (Rabat) - Victoria (also known as Rabat) is the capital city of Gozo. This was our favorite thing we did in Gozo because it’s a cute town with narrow alley ways, but it’s so much less crowded than Valletta! We wandered around here for hours, pet some stray cats, and took pictures of the gorgeous architecture. This is also where you will find a bunch of local shops, restaurants, and bars.
Check out the Ta’Xwejni Salt Pans - These salt pans are really cool to see because you can get really close to them! There are signs everywhere saying not to walk along them so make sure you follow those, but the salt pans are just on the side of the road and are very visible from the ledge. There is also a local gift shop that sells salt from the salt pans right across the street.
Hike to Wied Il-Ghasri - Gozo has a lot of natural rock formations, and Wied Il-Ghasri was our favorite. It’s a little bit of a hike to get there, but you can actually just walk from the Salt Pans if you want, it only takes about 25 minutes. The water here flows through two rocks and you can actually hike down and swim if you want! It was too cold for us to swim personally, but we saw some people doing it.
Visit the ruins of Azure Window - The Azure Window used to be a big tourist attraction in Gozo, it was even used in season 1 of Game of Thrones. It was a natural arch formed in the rocks, however a bad storm in 2017 caused it to collapse. You can still visit the ruins of the Azure Window and that area is still a cool place to visit, but the window itself is no longer there.
Take a tour of the Citadel - The Citadel, located in Victoria, is a medieval fortress and museum. We got there too late to visit the Museum, but the views from the top are gorgeous since the Citadel is on top of a hill. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in the Victoria (Rabat) area.
Honorable mentions of things to do in Gozo: Sanap Cliffs, Hondoq Bay, Tal-Mixta Cave, Ta’Dbiegi Crafts Village
