24 Hours in Verona, Italy

Verona was one of the places in Italy we were the most excited to visit during our trip. Verona is famous because of the Shakespeare play Romeo & Juliet — it takes place in Verona (and yes, Juliet was a real person who lived there!). We tend to love the smaller, quaint European cities the best, and Verona seemed like it had everything we needed. The catch was we were only going to be there for 24 hours, and we wanted to see as much as we could during that time. But I think we did it! It was downpour raining the entire day, but that didn’t stop us from exploring! Keep on reading to see what you have to do with 24 hours in Verona.

how to Get Around Verona

Walking is definitely the best way to get around Verona. The city is small and the streets are narrow so we do not recommend renting a car. We saw a lot of the locals biking, so if you like cycling you could do that too!

We came to Verona from Lake Como via the train. Verona’s train station Porta Nuova is about 1 mile outside the city center. We walked it with our bags, but there are local taxis that can take you to your accommodation from the train. Uber does not work in Verona.

Where to Stay in Verona

Lady Capulet Apartments

We stayed at Lady Capulet Apartments and we thought it was in the perfect location! We were able to walk to everything and the space was nicely decorated and clean. We would definitely recommend staying here when you visit Verona. The staff was also really nice and gave us tips on what to do and see around the city!

Best Things to do with 24 Hours in Verona

Castel San Pietro

Casa di Giuletta

Juliet’s Balcony

Castelvecchio

  • Visit Casa di Giuletta (Juliet’s House) - it’s the most popular and tourist-y thing to do in Verona but it is worth it! It’s Juliet’s actual house that has now been turned into a museum. It’s only €6 per person to enter, and we recommend going when they open at 9AM to avoid crowds. On the 2nd floor of the museum is Juliet’s balcony (yes, the famous balcony from the Shakespeare play!). Make sure you stop there and have someone take a picture of you on the balcony from the outside!

  • Take a stroll by the Verona Arena - it looks like a much smaller version of the Colosseum in Rome. Legend says it may have even been built before the Roman Colosseum! The Arena is in the center of the city so it’s hard to miss, but it’s definitely a must see when in Verona.

  • Go to the top of Castel San Pietro - a castle that overlooks the whole city! We went at sunset and even though it was raining, it was absolutely beautiful. You can either walk or pay €2 to take the funicular (cable car) to the top. We took the funicular up and walked down and thought that was perfect.

  • Visit Castelvecchio - a 13th century castle in Verona! We only went into the gardens and the museum shop since we were limited on time, but if you have more time definitely pay to go inside the museum.

  • Pop into the shops on Via Giuseppe Mazzini - here you will find luxury and local shops alike! The street runs right behind the Verona Arena so you can’t miss it. But honestly, Verona is so small that we highly suggest just roaming around and getting lost. We found some really cute shops, cafes, and bars just by walking past them.
